A Claude mark is not a hidden character you can delete. When two words would do, a key picks which one.
Anthropic published the method on 14 August 2026. When two words would do, a key picks which one. Light edits usually keep that trail. Replacing the wording does not.

Choose the job before you spend a credit
| What you have | What actually works | What we can verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Claude prose | Rewrite the words | The words changed. No private detector certificate. |
| Invisible Unicode, homoglyphs | Clean the characters in the browser | The named characters are gone. |
| C2PA, EXIF, XMP, document properties | Strip the file | Action list plus an independent reinspection. |
| Pixels, audio, or video | Not supported | No removal claim. |
Hidden characters are a different mark
Zero-width spaces are not what Anthropic described. A Claude watermark lives in ordinary words. Cleaning Unicode does not touch that trail.
The home page will name those characters if they are there. That inspection is free.
A rewrite is the paid job
New wording breaks the keyed sequence. A grammar pass is not a rewrite. Light edits usually keep the trail.
We cannot certify Anthropic’s detector. The key is private. The words changed is all an honest tool can say.
What this cannot promise
- A rewrite does not prove human authorship.
- No one outside Anthropic can certify their detector.
- Older models are still in transition. Do not assume every historical Claude completion is marked.
- C2PA soft binding can survive a metadata strip.
- Pixel watermarks, audio and video are out of scope.
Questions this usually raises
- Can I delete the Claude watermark like a zero-width space?
- No. Anthropic’s mark is which word came next. Hidden characters are a different job.
- Will a grammar pass remove it?
- No. A grammar pass is not a rewrite. Light edits usually keep the trail.
- Can you certify Anthropic’s detector?
- No. The key is private.
